Linguistics!

27 Aug

Graduate classes are up and running…this semester I’m taking a graduate-level linguistics course and a multicultural education course…should prove to be, um, interesting?  So, anyway, since I haven’t posted in a while, I’ll leave you a little puzzle…

English makes no sense when it comes to spelling, right?  George Bernard Shaw used to gripe and complain about the inconsistencies of sound-to-spelling correlations…He suggested that we throw it all out and have complete reform (regarding spelling, anyway)…his defense was that with our current lack of spelling patterns, it should be perfectly acceptable to spell the word “fish”, “ghoti”.  Can you break down his logic in this example?

The ‘gh’ in the word ‘ghoti’ that phonetically mimics the English word FISH has many examples (e.g. ‘ROUGH’, ‘TOUGH’ or ‘ENOUGH’). The ‘o’,’t’ and ‘i’ are TOUGH tho. If I figure it out, I’ll let you know.
